چکیده
The Aegean Sea area is thought to be an actively extending back-arc region, north of the present day Hellenic volcanic arc and north-dipping subduction zone in Eastern Mediterranean. shows extensive normal faulting, ductile ‘extensional’ shear zones extensional S-C fabrics throughout islands that have previously been related regional extension associated with slab rollback on Subduction Zone. In this paper, we question interpretation, suggest Cenozoic geodynamic evolution region a Late Cretaceous–Eocene NE-dipping was responsible for continent-continent collision between Eurasia Adria-Apulia/Cyclades. Exhumation eclogite blueschist facies rocks Cyclades kyanite-sillimanite grade gneisses Naxos core complex pressures are far greater than could accounted purely by lithospheric isostatic uplift. We identify four stages crustal shortening affected prior extension, herein called Orogeny. This orogeny followed classic Wilson cycle from early ophiolite obduction (ca. 74 Ma) onto passive continental margin, attempted HP metamorphism 54–45 Ma), through thickening kyanite – sillimanite Barrovian-type 22–14 orogenic collapse (<14 Ma). At least three periods relate to: (1) blueschists showing tight-isoclinal folds top-NE, base-SW fabrics, recording return flow along channel compressional tectonic setting 50–35 (2) Extensional within complexes formed exhumation kyanite- thrust-related at base top 18.5–14 (3) Regional ductile-brittle low-angle faulting North Cycladic Detachment (NCD) South(West) (WCD) during flanks major NW–SE anticlinal fold middle Cyclades. Major faults show symmetry about area, NE chain (Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Ikaria) exposing NCD consistent top-NE 200 km strike. contrast, Greek mainland (Attica) SE (Kea, Kythnos, Serifos) SW-dipping fault zone, WCD inferred 100 Islands deeper structural levels including sillimanite-grade metamorphic (Naxos, Paros) as well Variscan basement Ios). overall structure ~100 wavelength trending dome each flank, dipping away anticline axis SW. Long Term Flux of Saharan Dust to the Aegean Sea around the Attica Region, Greece
In this study, Particulate Matter (PM) samples, collected during 2 summer and 2 winter months over a long-term period (1984–2012) at a suburban site in Athens (Greece), were used in order to examine the connection between Sahara dust long range transport events and mass concentrations of the aerosol mineral component, as well as the relative abundance of specific crustal components. As a result...
متن کاملTurnover of passerine birds on islands in the Aegean Sea (Greece)
Methods The passerine birds of these islands were surveyed between 1954 and 1961 by G.E. Watson, and were resurveyed between 1988 and 1992. The effects of migratory status and body size on the probabilities of extinction and immigration were examined by G-tests of linear trend in proportion, and analysis of variance, respectively. A combined analysis of migratory status, body size and physical ...
متن کاملPRELIMINARY REPORT The earthquake of January 8, 2013 at SE of Limnos Island, Northern Aegean, Greece
At 16:16 local time (14:16 GMT) January 8, 2013 a moderate size earthquake ML5.8 (Mw5.7) occurred 40 km SE off the coasts of Limnos island, Northern Aegean, Greece. The epicenter coordinates were calculated to 39.636N 25.576E and the focal depth to 32.3 km (MT centroid depth 8 km) according to the Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens (NOAIG). The earthquake was felt at a wid...
متن کاملEpidemiology of First Epileptic Seizures in the Northern Aegean Island of Lesvos, Greece
We aimed at establishing the epidemiologic profile of first epileptic seizures (FES) in the Greek island of Lesvos. During a 1-year period (01/06/2010 to 31/05/2011), cases of FES admitted to the Lesvos General Hospital/addressed by general practitioners/private neurologists were prospectively identified. A total of 45 cases (30 males and 15 females; mean age ± SD of 59.4 ± 28.4 and 58.9 ± 26.8...
متن کاملMetazoan parasite species in cultured mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in the Thermaikos Gulf (North Aegean Sea, Greece).
This is the first study on parasites of cultured Mytilus galloprovincialis L. in Greek waters, and is based on samples collected every 2 to 3 mo between September 2000 and November 2001 at 3 stations in the Thermaikos Gulf. Each sample comprised 40 mussels. We found 4 metazoan parasite species: hydroid Eugymnanthea inquilina, gill turbellarian Urastoma cyprinae, trematode Proctoces maculatus an...
